Grande Prairie Forest Area Wildfire Update - May 27, 2022

The wildfire danger for the Grande Prairie Forest Area is Moderate. Rain and cooler temperatures have reduced the wildfire danger. If you spot smoke or fire in the forest report it by calling 310-FIRE (3743).

Wildfire Situation

Since March 1, 2022 there have been 13 wildfires burning nearly six hectares in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. At this time, 12 of these fires have been extinguished and one is listed as under control. When travelling on an off high-way vehicle, Stop regularly and check around the exhaust and wheel wells for any buildup of flammable material, especially after passing through wet areas. When traveling through the Forest Protection Area during the fire season, carry a shovel or an axe and a receptacle of at least 5 liters liquid capacity.

The wildfire dashboard is a new feature that provides up-to-date wildfire information at the click of a button. This interactive tool displays important statistics on the number of active wildfires in the province, sizes, locations, suspected causes and more.

Before you burn it get a permit 

During fire season, from March 1st to October 31st, a fire permit is required for any type of outdoor burning in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta with the exception of a campfire for cooking or warming. Albertans living or working in the Forest Protection Area (FPA)  of the province can request a free fire permit by contacting your local forestry office or using the online Fire Permit Portal.
