GRANDE PRAIRIE FOREST AREA | WILDFIRE SITUATION | JULY 28, 2022 AT 8:00 PM

GWF 032 located approximately 61 kilometers west of Fox Creek. At this time this fire is classified as burning out of control (OC). Airtankers were successful in slowing the spread and continue to douse hotspots. Airtankers have also laid fire retardant around the majority of the wildfire's edge. The size is estimated to be 25 hectares. There are 13 firefighters with three helicopters, and heavy equipment working on this wildfire. Tomorrow, firefighters will continue to work to extinguish the fire with helicopters support with bucketing operations. A fire advisory is issued for the Grande Prairie Forest Area effective Monday, July 18, 2022 due to current and forecasted dry and windy weather conditions. 
 
Under this advisory:
• Current fire permits remain valid;
• New fire permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis.
 
Prohibited:
• Any burning without a valid fire permit, other than a campfire, is prohibited.
 
Allowed:
• Safe wood campfires *
• Backyard fire pits
• Portable propane fire pits
• Gas or propane stoves and barbecues
• Catalytic or infrared-style heaters
 
*Safe wood campfires - should be within a metal, brick, or rock fire ring.
They are required to: 
• Be on rock, gravel, sand, or another non-combustible surface that extends at least one metre around the fire; 
• Have a responsible person in attendance to keep fire under control at all times and extinguish before leaving;
• Have on hand enough water on site to extinguish the fire. Safe wood campfires on private lands include private land campgrounds and private land recreation areas; and
• Municipalities, Parks and protected areas may have additional fire safety requirements.
 
Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished.

Fire Permits

During wildfire season, you are required to have a fire permit if you plan on burning in the Forest Protection Area (FPA), with the exception of a campfire.  Anyone living outside the FPA can contact their municipality for information about local fire permit requirements.
Albertans living or working in the Forest Protection Area of the province can request a free fire permit by contacting your local forestry office or using the new, convenient online Fire Permit Portal.
