Wildfire Prevention

Motorists are responsible for many wildfire sparked along Alberta roadways. Here are some things you can do to prevent human-caused wildfires when driving.
  • Secure chains: Practice safe towing, dragging chains can cause sparks. Use appropriate safety pins and hitch ball to secure chains.
  • No dragging parts: Make sure your vehicle is safely maintained, with nothing dragging on the ground.
  • Check tire pressure: Maintain proper tire pressure, driving on exposed wheel rims will cause sparks.
  • Avoid driving into dry grass:  Don’t drive your vehicle onto dry grass or brush. Avoid parking in fields and narrow shoulders on the side of the road. Dry grass can ignited when exposed to hot exhaust pipe or muffler.
  • Properly maintain brakes: Brakes worn too thin may cause metal to metal contact which can produce sparks that fly onto dry fuels along the road.

Fire Permits

During wildfire season, you are required to have a fire permit if you plan on burning in the Forest Protection Area (FPA), with the exception of a campfire.  Anyone living outside the FPA can contact their municipality for information about local fire permit requirements.
Albertans living or working in the Forest Protection Area of the province can request a free fire permit by contacting your local forestry office or using the new, convenient online Fire Permit Portal.
