Fort McMurray - Heavy smoke blanketing Fort McMurray from BC wildfires

High temperatures and gusty winds have escalated the the wildfire danger level to Extreme in the Fort McMurray forest area. Smoke in the area is coming from the wildfires in BC. Check firesmoke.caIf you have smoke related health concerns, please call 811 or visiAlberta Health Services.

WILDFIRE SITUATION - August 10, 2018

Currently there is one wildfire in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
 
MWF-093 is located 35 km west of Fort Mackay. This wildfire is 31.6 hectares and is now classified as under control. There are 4 helicopters and 3 crews working this fire.
 
Since March 1, 2018 there have been 94 wildfires that have burned approximately 2,671 hectares in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
 

Provincial Situation

August 10 at 10 am

There are currently 24 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. 1 is out of control, 7 are being held, 12 are under control, and 3 have been turned over to the responsible parties.

o   RWF-049 (Skeleton Creek Wildfire) – This out of control wildfire is 842 hectares in size and is located in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, 1.4 km east of the junction of Forbidden Creek and Skeleton Creek, and 5.4 km northwest of the Scalp Creek Natural Area . There are 14 wildland firefighters and support staff and 3 helicopters currently fighting this wildfire.

  • Since March 1, 2018, Alberta has recorded 1,105 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area that have burned a total of 50,661 hectares.

Make sure it's out! A campfire left smoldering can cause a wildfire. Never leave your campfire unattended and make sure it's out. Soak it with water, stir up the ashes and soak it again. A campfire is out when the ashes are cool to the touch.
