Wildfire Update - Whitecourt Forest Area

WILDFIRE DANGER

The wildfire danger is variable in the Whitecourt Forest Area. Areas south of Highway 43 received some rain yesterday reducing the wildfire danger to MODERATE. Areas north of Highway 43 and west of Highway 33 remain HIGH. Areas east of Highway 33 are elevated to VERY HIGH, keeping the wildfire danger at HIGH overall.

If you are heading home after a weekend of camping, ensure your campfire is completely extinguished before you go. Soak the ashes, stir them and soak them again until they are cool to the touch. We can all do our part to prevent wildfires.

FIRE ADVISORY

A fire advisory issued on May 14, 2018 remains in place for the Whitecourt Forest Area. The advisory is due to persistent dry weather, and the dry grass wildfire hazard. Dry grass provides fuel for fast moving wildfires.

Not permitted

Any burning (except campfires) within the Whitecourt Forest Area.
All fire permits (except burn barrels) are now suspended.

Permitted

Safe wood campfires in campgrounds (within fire rings) or random camping areas
Charcoal briquettes
Portable propane fire pits
Catalytic or infrared-style heaters
Permitted burn barrels.

Whitecourt Forest Area

In the last 24 hours, there have been no new wildfires in the Whitecourt Forest Area.
Since March 1, 2018, there have been 13 wildfires; with a total area burnt of 9.57 hectares.

Province of Alberta

There are currently 23 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. 5 are being held, 12 are under control, and 6 have been turned over to the responsible parties. Learn more about wildfire status definitions.
Since March 1, 2018, Alberta has recorded 366 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area; with a total area burnt of 1,346.94 hectares.
