The forest is very dry within the Whitecourt Wildfire Management Area (WWMA) keeping the wildfire hazard at EXTREME. Today's temperature will be 24 degrees Celsius, with winds reaching 15 km/hr. There is no rain in the forecast, keeping grass, leaves and fallen branches extremely dry: these fuel sources are highly flammable. Under current conditions a wildfire will act in an explosive manner, making it difficult to contain.

A Fire Advisory remains in place for the majority of the area. This means no burning. All fire permits are suspended with the exception of burn barrels. No new fire permits will be issued until conditions improve.

Safe campfires are permitted, but may be restricted in the coming days if conditions worsen. Remember to properly extinguish your campfire before you leave - SOAK IT, STIR IT, AND SOAK IT AGAIN.

How can you help us?

We encourage everyone to be diligent while working or recreating in forested areas

If you are using an Off-Highway Vehicle, periodically check your vehicle for the build up of grass, branches and other debris. This material can catch fire and drop from your vehicle as you drive, which can start a wildfire.

If you have any questions, please contact me. Unless conditions change, you can expect your next wildfire update May 23rd.
