Fire permits are no longer needed however you are required to burn responsibly. If you are conducting brush pile or windrow burning this winter please follow these safe burning practices and report your winter burns to Slave Lake Forest Area Wildfire Technologist Russell Murphy by calling 780-849-7457 or email Russell.Murphy@gov.ab.ca
End of Wildfire Season
October 31st, marked the official end of the 2016 wildfire season in Alberta.
Wildfire Season Summary
There have been no new wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area since September 22nd. Over the 2016 wildfire season we recorded a total of 218 wildfires and a total area burned of 2261.18 hectares. Of the 218 wildfires this season, 61% were caused by lightning and 39% were caused by human activity.
Since April 1st, 2016 Alberta has recorded 1356 wildfires and a total area burned of 611, 476.52 hectares.
Wildfire protection laws to be strengthened
The Alberta Government is improving legislation that supports wildfire prevention and helps protect communities. Bill 24, the Forest and Prairie Protection Amendment Act, was tabled in the legislature today, introducing measures aimed at reducing the number of wildfires caused by humans and enhancing firefighting operations.
