Slave Lake Forest Area Wildfire Update - November 1, 2016

Over the next several days, firefighters will be burning areas of dry grass in and around many communities in the Slave Lake Forest Area.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact Wildfire Information Officer Leah Lovequist 780-849-0945.

End of Wildfire Season

October 31st, marked the official end of the 2016 wildfire season in Alberta. We are heading into the winter with a LOW wildfire hazard for the Slave Lake Forest Area.

Winter Burning

Fire permits are no longer needed however you are required to burn responsibly. If you are conducting brush pile or windrow burning this winter please follow these safe burning practices and report your winter burns to Slave Lake Forest Area Wildfire Technologist Russell Murphy by calling 780-849-7457.

Wildfire Season Summary

There have been no new wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area since September 22nd. Over the 2016 wildfire season we recorded a total of 218 wildfires and a total area burned of 2261.18 hectares. Of the 218 wildfires this season, 61% were caused by lightning and 39% were caused by human activity. 

There have been two new wildfires in the past 24 hours in the province of Alberta. As of 10:00 am this morning one is being held and one is under control. Since April 1st, 2016 Alberta has recorded 1337 wildfires and a total area burned of 611, 456.20 hectares.

Wildfire protection laws to be strengthened

The Alberta Government is improving legislation that supports wildfire prevention and helps protect communities. Bill 24, the Forest and Prairie Protection Amendment Act, was tabled in the legislature today, introducing measures aimed at reducing the number of wildfires caused by humans and enhancing firefighting operations.
