Slave Lake Area Update

Scattered rain brought some relief. Areas around High Prairie and south of Lesser Slave Lake remain HIGH.

Wildfire Hazard

The rain last night was very scattered.The wildfire hazard is LOW for areas north of Lesser Slave Lake and HIGH for areas around High Prairie and south of Lesser Slave Lake . Click here to view the wildfire hazard map.

The wildfire hazard is expected to climb as warm and sunny weather is in the forecast for this week.

On High Alert
 
Firefighters, helicopters and airtankers are stationed strategically throughout the area, ready to fight any new wildfires that may starts and our lookout tower personnel are constantly watching for smoke.
 
 
Weather Forecast
 
For today, the forecast is calling for warm temperatures and winds from the southeast/southwest at 15 kilometers per hour.The long-term forecast is calling for warm and sunny weather for the rest of the week.

Wildfire situation in the Slave Lake Forest Area

There were three new wildfires over the weekend. One is being held at 0.01 hectares and two have been extinguished at 0.01 and 0.5 hectares.

SFW 179 (Slave Lake Wildfire number 179) located south of Blanchet Lake has been extinguished.

SWF 181 (Slave Lake Wildfire number 181) located south of highway 686 on the way to Peerless Lake has been extinguished. 

Since April 1st there have been 188 wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area and the total area burned is just over 2252 hectares.

By getting a fire permit you help keep our firefighters free to fight real wildfires instead of investigating the smoke in your backyard. 
 
Fire Permits
 
Fire permits are required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area. 

Fire permits are free and can be obtained by calling your local Alberta Agriculture and Forestry office.

Campfires do not require a fire permit.

Do your part to prevent wildfires this summer
 
Check your off-highway vehicle frequently for any smoldering debris. Grass, muskeg, moss or other debris can drop to the ground as you're riding and spark a wildfire.This video shows you how to ride debris free! 
 
Never leave your campfire unattended and make sure it's out. A campfire left smouldering can cause a wildfire.This video shows you how to make sure your campfire is out.

Incendiary shooting targets have been banned across the province.These targets explode when shot with a firearm and have been known to cause wildfires.

To prevent wildfires when using farm equipment ensure your machine is clear of flammable crop residue, check for sparks frequently and carry firefighting equipment on board.
