Slave Lake Area Update

Lightning sparked 13 new wildfires this evening.

Warm weather and lack of rain has caused the wildfire hazard to climbed to VERY HIGH for areas north of Lesser Slave Lake. Areas around and south of Lesser Slave Lake are at HIGH. Click here to view the wildfire hazard map.

When recreating or working in the forest use caution and report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE (3473).

High Alert

We are expecting a good chance of lightning again tomorrow afternoon. Firefighters with helicopters and airtankers will be stationed throughout the area ready to fight any new wildfires that may start. We also have our personnel in the fire towers on high alert constantly watching for smoke.  

Weather Forecast

For Thursday, the forecast is calling for temperatures in the mid twenties, winds from the southeast 20 kilometres per hour and a good chance of isolated thundershowers with lightning in the afternoon.

Wildfire Situation for the Slave Lake Forest Area

Lightning sparked 13 new wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area this afternoon/evening. Five of the wildfires were located around Utikuma Lake and eight were located around the Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park. All wildfires were very small (1-3 trees burning) and firefighters have made good progress on containing and extinguishing them. As of 9:00 pm this evening twelve have been extinguished and one is under control.

Firefighters and helicopters continue to fight the wildfire located east of Wood Buffalo Lake.The wildfire did not spread today and was accurately measured to be 60 hectares in size.There are 45 firefighters and six helicopters working to contain this wildfire.

Since April 1st there have been 166 wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area and the total area burned is just over 2210 hectares.

Your off-highway vehicle can start a wildfire. Check your off-highway vehicle frequently for any smoldering debris. Grass, muskeg, moss or other debris can drop to the ground as you're riding and spark a wildfire.This video shows you how to ride debris free!

Please do your part to prevent wildfires this weekend. Never leave your campfire unattended and make sure it's out. A campfire left smouldering can cause a wildfire.This video shows you how to make sure your campfire is out.

Fire Permits - Fire permits are required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area. Campfires do not require a fire permit.

Fire permits are free and can be obtained by calling your local Alberta Agriculture and Forestry office.
