Slave Lake Area Update

Here's your 6:00 pm update on the three new wildfires that were spotted late this afternoon.

Airtankers have made good progress on slowing the spread of SWF181 located south of highway 686 on the way to Peerless Lake. The wildfire is now being held and is estimated to be one hectare in size. Use caution when travelling highway 686. 

SWF 180 is located east of Vandersteene Lake. It is being held at 0.01 hectares.

SWF 179 located south of Blanchet Lake is 10 hectares and classified as burning out of control.

 

Wildfire Hazard

Warm weather and lack of rain has caused the wildfire hazard to climb to HIGH for the Slave Lake Forest Area. Click here to view the wildfire hazard map. Use caution as conditions are dry and report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE.

Wildfire Situation for the Slave Lake Forest Area

Since April 1st there have been 181 wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area and the total area burned is just over 2240 hectares.

Weather Forecast
Today the forecast is calling for temperatures in the mid twenties, winds from the southeast/southwest up to 20 kilometres per hour and a chance of isolated thundershowers.
An artic cold front is slowly moving into the boreal and widespread showers are forecasted for mid week.

Fire Permits
 
Fire permits are required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area. 

Fire permits are free and can be obtained by calling your local Alberta Agriculture and Forestry office.

Campfires do not require a fire permit.

By getting a fire permit you help keep our firefighters free to fight real wildfires instead of investigating the smoke in your backyard.

Do your part to prevent wildfires this summer
 
Check your off-highway vehicle frequently for any smoldering debris. Grass, muskeg, moss or other debris can drop to the ground as you're riding and spark a wildfire.This video shows you how to ride debris free! 
 
Never leave your campfire unattended and make sure it's out. A campfire left smouldering can cause a wildfire.This video shows you how to make sure your campfire is out.

Incendiary shooting targets have been banned across the province.These targets explode when shot with a firearm and have been known to cause wildfires.

To prevent wildfires when using farm equipment ensure your machine is clear of flammable crop residue, check for sparks frequently and carry firefighting equipment on board.
