Lightning sparks new wildfires this afternoon. Hazard remains HIGH.

Wildfire Hazard

Recent warm and sunny weather has caused the wildfire hazard to climb to HIGH for the Slave Lake Forest Area. Use caution and report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE. Rain is in the forecast for the weekend however until rain is on the ground conditions remain dry. Click here to view the wildfire hazard map.

On High Alert
 
Firefighters, helicopters and airtankers are stationed strategically throughout the area, ready to fight any new wildfires that may starts and our lookout tower personnel are constantly watching for smoke.
 
Weather Forecast
 
For Friday, the forecast is calling for warm temperatures and winds from the southwest at 20 kilometers per hour. There is a chance of thundershowers in the late afternoon.  

Wildfire situation in the Slave Lake Forest Area

Lightning has sparked eight new wildfires this afternoon. All are small. Firefighters and aircraft are working to contain and extinguish them.

Since April 1st there have been 196 wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area and the total area burned is just over 2,255 hectares.

By getting a fire permit you help keep our firefighters free to fight real wildfires instead of investigating the smoke in your backyard. 
 
Fire Permits
 
Fire permits are required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area. 

Fire permits are free and can be obtained by calling your local Alberta Agriculture and Forestry office.

Campfires do not require a fire permit.

Do your part to prevent wildfires this summer
 
Check your off-highway vehicle frequently for any smoldering debris. Grass, muskeg, moss or other debris can drop to the ground as you're riding and spark a wildfire.This video shows you how to ride debris free! 
 
Never leave your campfire unattended and make sure it's out. A campfire left smouldering can cause a wildfire.This video shows you how to make sure your campfire is out.

Incendiary shooting targets have been banned across the province.These targets explode when shot with a firearm and have been known to cause wildfires.

To prevent wildfires when using farm equipment ensure your machine is clear of flammable crop residue, check for sparks frequently and carry firefighting equipment on board.
