Slave Lake Area Update

Wildfire hazard VERY HIGH. Strong winds expected. Postpone burning.

The wildfire hazard will be VERY HIGH for Tuesday April 28th. The forecast is calling for very warm temperatures and strong gusty winds for Tuesday afternoon/evening. Areas of dead, dry grass are extremely flammable and under windy conditions a fire will spread very quickly. Residents and visitors are urged to be extra cautious and postpone any burning until the winds are calm. Report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE (3473).

 

Weather Forecast

A strong cold front is expected to pass through Tuesday afternoon/evening accompanied by SE winds 20 to 30 kilometers per hour gusting up to 50. Click here to view the weather forecast.

Firefighters with helicopters, heavy equipment and an airtanker group are stationed throughout the area ready to fight any new wildfires that may start. We also have our personnel in the fire towers on high alert constantly watching for smoke. 

 

Wildfire Report as of April 27 4:00 pm

There were 11 new wildfires over the weekend in the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area. Seven have been extinguished, three are under control and one has been turned over to the landowner who is responsible to extinguish the fire. The total are burned was 10.94 hectares. 

Since April 1, the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area has recorded 29 wildfires which have burned 92.84 hectares. 24 of the wildfires have been extinguished,three are under control and one has been turned over to the landowner who is resposible to extinguish the fire.

Fire Permits

All fire permit holders are reminded to check the weather and your permit conditions.  If you cannot meet the conditions on your permit, do not ignite new burns and extinguish those already burning.

From March 1 to October 31, Albertans in the forested areas need to get a FIRE PERMIT for any burning, excluding campfires. To request your free fire permit call your local Environment and Sustainable Resource Development Office.
