Warm weather causes wildfire hazard to climb. Safe campfires are allowed.

Today's Wildfire Hazard

Warm weather has caused the wildfire hazard to climb in the Slave Lake Wildire Management Area.

The overall wildfire hazard is MODERATE however the hazard is HIGH for areas around Fawcette Lake, Wabasca, Kinuso, High Prairie and south of Red Earth. Until a significant amount rain is on the ground the forests will remain dry and a fire will spread quickly under windy conditions. Use caution while out enjoying our forests and report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE (3473).

Weather Forecast

For today the forecast is calling for temperatures in the high teens, a chance of showers and winds from the northeast 15 to 20 kilometres per hour.

For saturday the forecast is calling for a chance of rain for areas south of Lesser Slave Lake.

 

Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area wildfire situation as of 10:00 am June 19th

On June 16th there was one new wildfire caused by lightning. Thanks to the hard work of firefighters it was quickly contained and extinguished. Since April 1, in the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area there have been 107 wildfires and 1,199.45 hectares burned.

 

Alberta Wildfire Update as of 10:00 am June 19th

In the last 24 hours there have been no new wildfires. Alberta currently has 23 wildfires. Two are being held, 20 are under control and one has been turned over to the responsible party.Since April 1, 2015, Alberta has recorded 889 wildfires that have burned a total of 90,174.21 hectares. For more information on the wildfires burning in Alberta visit the wildfire status map at www.wildfire.alberta.ca or download the Alberta Wildfire App.

FIRE ADVISORY does remain in effect for the entire Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area

We are constantly monitoring the weather, rainfall amounts and wildfire hazard and will adjust the fire advisory when conditions permit – significant rainfall is received. We appreciate your cooperation. Abiding by the fire advisory keeps our firefighters free to fight any new wildfires that may start.

Safe campfires are allowed in campgrounds, backyards, backcountry and random camping areas. 

Fire permits remain suspended and no new fire permits will be issued. Exceptions are burn barrels, smokehouses, smudges and sweatlodges - these are allowed - a valid fire permit is required. Call your local Aberta Agriculture and Forestry Office to request a fire permit at 310-0000.

Soak it, Stir it up and Soak it Again

Help prevent wildfires while riding your off-highway vehicle

When riding your off-highway vehicle be sure to stop often and clean any debris from the hotspots. Unchecked, the debris can build up, begin to smolder and fall away sparking a wildfire. Click here to learn how you can prevent wildfires while riding your OHV.
