Wildfire danger
The wildfire danger is LOW for the majority of the Slave Lake Forest Area.
The wildfire danger around the community of Slave Lake is MODERATE due to the large areas of dead dry grass that are exposed.
Firefighters burning grass
Over the next several weeks, firefighters will be burning areas of dry grass in and around many communities in the Slave Lake Forest Area. Burning will help to remove the dangerous build-up of dry grass that becomes prominent around many communities in the spring.
Firefighters will be burning grass in the Mitsue area this afternoon and again on Saturday.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Wildfire Information Officer Leah Lovequist 780-849-0945.
Have you burned this winter?
Take the time to go back and revisit your winter burns to ensure they are extinguished. Snow will not put out a fire. A fire left smouldering can continue to burn under the snow all winter long and re-emerge as a wildfire in the spring.
Follow these tips to prevent wildfires this spring:
- Spread remaining material within the pile and soak with water as required.
- Check the area and ensure both heat and smoke are no longer being produced by the pile – it should be cool to the touch.
- Check your burn site multiple times in the following weeks to ensure it has not reignited.
Please report your winter burn locations to Slave Lake Forest Area Wildfire Technologist Russell Murphy by calling 780-849-7457.

Fire Permits are required
From March 1st to October 31st, a fire permit is required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area. A campfire for cooking or warming does not require a fire permit.
