Slave Lake Area Update

Slave Lake Forest Area Wildfire Update - February 24, 2021

Posted on Wed, Feb 24, 2021

wildfire season starts

Wildfire Season starts March 1st

If you have conducted any winter burning, go back and revisit your burn site to ensure the fires are extinguished.

When checking your winter burns, spread around any remaining debris so you can probe the area for hotspots. Use your bare hand to feel for heat over the ash piles. If you see smoke or feel heat, the fire is still burning. Douse any remaining hotspots with water and stir up the ashes. A fire is not out until there is absolutely no heat emanating from the ashes.

Fire Permits

Starting March 1st, fire permits are required for any burning, except campfires, in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. To request your free fire permit call your local Agriculture and Forestry Office.

Red Earth/Slave Lake 780-849-7377

Wabasca 780-891-3860

High Prairie 780-523-6619

Fire permits help us to track what is burning on the landscape. If you're burning without a fire permit or outside fire permit conditions, your fire is considered a wildfire. By getting a permit you help keep our firefighters free to fight real wildfires instead of responding to the smoke in your backyard.

Unless conditions change you can expect your next wildfire update on March 8th , 2021.
