Slave Lake Forest Area Fire Ban in Effect - May 25

A Fire Ban is now in effect for the Slave Lake Forest Area, Town of Slave Lake, Town of High Prairie and Big Lakes County. 

Where is the fire ban?

  • The fire ban includes ares in the northern half of the province.  

What is prohibited?

  • All open fires are banned, including campfires in campgrounds, backcountry and random camping areas.  This includes charcoal briquettes, turkey fryers and tiki torches.

What is allowed?

  • Portable propane fire pits, gas or propane stoves and barbeques (not charcoal briquettes) designed for cooking or heating, and catalytic or infrared-style heaters.

How long will the fire ban be in place?

  • Alberta Agriculture and Forestry will be monitoring conditions on a daily basis and will amend the fire ban as appropriate.

Wildfire danger 

The wildfire danger for the Slave Lake Forest Area is EXTREME.

The conditions in the forest are extremely dry and a wildfire will ignite easily and spread very quickly.

Use caution and report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE(3473).

A Fire Ban for the Slave Lake Forest Area was issued May 25, 2018 for Northern Alberta. Fire permits are cancelled and no new fire permits will be issued.

Wildfire Situation 3:00 pm Friday May 25, 2018

Firefighters are keeping a close eye on the areas where lightning struck during recent thunderstorms. It can take a few days or more for a lightning caused wildfire to emerge. 

Since March 1, 2018, the Slave Lake Forest Area has recorded 47 wildfires that have burned a total of 60.48 hectares.

May 25rd update from Lac La Biche  - Wildfire near Rock Island Lake

Lac La Biche Area Update - LWF -099, east of Rock Island Lake, is out of control at just under 3500 hectares. This fire grew to the north again today however it remains about 32 km from Sandy Lake and 24 km from Calling Lake. Seven helicopters with buckets are fighting this wildfire.  Smoke may drift onto highway 813 and at times traffic may be controlled. Click here for the most up to date road conditions. 


 

Weather

Today the forecast is calling for a temperatures around 23 degrees Celsius with a cold front moving in tomorrow bringing with it lower temperatures and the potential for lightning to occur this evening.

The crossover conditions today will cause a wildfire to exhibit extreme fire behavior. Crossover occurs when the relative humidity (moisture in the air) is equal to or less than the air temperature.
