Slave Lake Area Update

Friday Wildfire Hazard VERY HIGH to EXTREME. Fire Restriction remains in effect.

At this time, firefighters in helicopters and airtankers are battling three small wildfires west of Sandy Lake and Chipewyan Lakes. Lightning which passed through the area ignited these wildfires.

 

Wildfire Hazard for FRIDAY June 5th

Warm weather and winds have caused the wildfire hazard to climb to VERY HIGH - EXTREME in the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area. The forest is extremely dry and a fire will spread very quickly under windy conditions. Report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE (3473). 

EXTREME - High Prairie, Kinuso, Wabasca, Sandy Lake, Trout Lake, Peerless Lake and Chipewyan Lake. 

VERY HIGH - Slave Lake, Wagner, Widewater, Canyon Creek, Assineau, Gift Lake and Red Earth. 

For Friday, the forecast is calling for very warm temperatures, risk of thundershowers in the late afternoon/ evening with strong and gusty winds from the northwest 20 gusting up 50 kilometers per hour.

What’s prohibited?

Wood campfires in backcountry or random camping areas, charcoal briquettes, turkey fryers and tiki torches. Campfires are prohibited on private property (example -backyard fire pit) as well.

Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area Update 4:30 pm

There have been no new wildfires in the past 24 hours in the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area. Since April 1, there have been 91 wildfires and 1,180.47 hectares burned 

Provincial Update 10:00 am 

In the last 24 hours there have been five new wildfires. Alberta currently has 42 wildfires. Two are out of control, 10 are being held, 28 are under control and two have been turned over to the responsible party. Since April 1, 2015, Alberta has recorded 785 wildfires that have burned a total of 49,494.7 hectares.

Firefighters with helicopters, heavy equipment and airtankers  are stationed throughout the area ready to fight any new wildfires that may start. We also have our personnel in the fire towers on high alert constantly watching for smoke. 

Thank you to all for cooperating with the fire restriction. Abiding by the fire restriction helps to keep our firefighters free to fight wildfires that are still burning and any new wildfires that may start.
