Wildfire Hazard

Warm and dry weather drives the wildfire hazard to EXTREME for the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area

The conditions in the forest are very dry and under windy conditions a fire will spread very quickly. Use extreme caution and report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE (3473).

Weather Forecast

For Friday May 22nd, the forecast is calling for very warm temperatures in high twenties and light winds from the NE 10 to 15 kilometers per hour.

Thanks to the hard work of our firefighters, air tankers, helicopters, and heavy equipment groups the wildfire located approximately 125 kilometers north of Slave Lake is BEING HELD. Being held means the wildfire is not expected to grow based on the current weather. The wildfire was accurately measured today and is 256 hectares in size. Highway 88 is open. For the safety of our firefighters please reduce your speed when travelling through the area.

 

Wildfire Situation as of May 21 5:00pm

There were two new wildfire this afternoon. Firefighters are on the scene and have contained them. The wildfire near the community of Peavine is being held and is 0.6 hectares in size. The other wildfire is 0.01 hectares and is under control.

Since April 1st, there have been 60 wildfires in the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area and just over 580 hectares burned.

Currently in the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area, 116 firefighters, 18 helicopters, eight heavy equipment groups, two airtanker groups have been stationed strategically throughout the area and are ready to battle any new wildfires that may start.  We also have firefighters in helicopters doing aerial patrols and all 20 of our lookout tower observers are continually watching for smoke.
