Strong gusting winds are expected to continue. High winds can cause extreme fire behavior and allow fires to grow rapidly. Residents and visitors to the Peace River Wildfire Management Area are urged to be extra cautious with any burning at this time.

Please help us action wildfires quickly by calling 310-FIRE to report a wildfire.

Winds over 20 km/hr with gusts up to 40 km/hr and higher temperatures will keep the wildfire hazard High for the next several days in the Peace River area. While fire permits are being issued , please check your fire permits to ensure you are burning safely and within your permit conditions. Wind can pick up small sparks and carry them several kilometers away, potentially starting wildfires in dry areas. Your help with preventing wildfires is greatly appreciated.

Local Wildfires

There have been 81 wildfires in the Peace River Wildfire Management Area this fire season, all but 10 have been extinguished.  At this time, 7 wildfire are listed as under control and three as being held. We are currently assisting British Columbia with a border zone fire (PBZ 001) is 80 hectares in sized, located 11.5 miles north of Paddy airstrip approximately 500m from the Alberta border.

The Hotchkiss complex (now comprised of PWF 050, 052 and 054) is located just southwest of the Hotchkiss Lookout down the Chinchaga Forestry Road.  This fire has now been surrounded by dozer guard and is not expected to spread beyond its current boundaries.  A map of the complex is now available here. Please note that this map was made before the wildfires became classified as being held.

Firefighting crews, air tankers and heavy equipment are working diligently to get these wildfires under control and will continue to do so until they are extinguished.
