Fire advisory remains in effect as fire hazard levels continue to climb

Due to cured grass, expected warmer temperatures and increased wind speed a Fire Advisory is in place for the Peace River Forest Area starting May 5, 2017.

•Light flashy fuels such as dry grass will ignite easily and spread quickly. Use extreme caution if burning and have a water source nearby.
•Small campfires are allowed. Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak
it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished.
•The issuing of permits will be left to the discretion of a forest officer. Existing permits may be suspended until conditions change.
•Those existing permits for fields and/or windrow and large debris piles will be contacted and advised by phone.

The Fire Advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve.

Please exercise caution when working and recreating in the forest and report any smoke or wildfires to 310-FIRE IMMEDIATELY.

Strong winds forecasted

Strong winds are forecasted over the next 24 hours, and are expected to strengthen in the afternoon, gusting up to 45 km/hr from the east.  Please keep in mind the wind conditions on your fire permit and refrain from burning when the winds exceed that limit.  Some light scattered showers are expected, but will make little impact towards reducing that hazard in the forecasted strong winds. Please exercise caution when recreating and working in the forest.

PREV_OHV_HotSpots_HubSpot.jpgCured grassy areas are of high concern this time of year as they allow fires to spread very quickly. Off-highway vehicles operating in grassy areas have a higher risk of starting a wildfire. Take the time to check your back trail and clean debris from your vehicle, before, during and after your ride.

soakitstiritsoakit1.jpgAll campfires should be supervised at all times and completely and thoroughly extinguished before you leave.  Keep water on hand and make sure to soak it, stir it and then soak it again and repeat as necessary until the ashes are cool and smoke is no longer visible.

Before you burn it, get your permit

As of March 1st, all burning activities in Alberta’s Forest Protection Area, excluding campfires, now require a fire permit. Fire permits are free and available at your local Agriculture and Forestry office.  You can call 780-624-6190 for more information or to obtain your free fire permit.

Agricultural burning

Crop burning should be used as a final management option for unharvested crops. Consider bailing, removing the crops from field and later burning them away from the field.  Read more at agric.gov.ab.ca

Should you decide to burn your field, you will need a fire permit if you are within the Forest Protection Area.  Call 780-624-6190 for more information on how to obtain your free fire permit.

Changes to the Forest and Prairie Protection Act

The Alberta government is committed to protecting Albertans and their communities from the threat of wildfire.  Far too many wildfires are caused by human-activity and are 100 per cent preventable. Approximately 70 per cent of wildfires over the last six years have resulted from human activity.  In fall of last year, we passed legislation to enhance wildfire prevention, to deter risky behaviour and give wildland firefighters more tools to keep Albertans and their communities safe.

These regulation changes help support the legislation by including:
  • new penalties for violations such as abandoning campfires or burning during fire bans,
  • and improving government’s ability to restrict higher risk activities, like fireworks and incendiary targets.

Penalties will be determined by a statutory decision-maker on a case-by-case basis.
