Prescribed Fire Success!!

The Peace River Wildfire Management Area successfully burned the East Peace Prescribed Fire this afternoon (Friday).  Approximately 700 hectares were burned along the banks of the Peace River in an effort to help improve habitat for the deer, moose and elk in the area.
This was a controlled burn and we ask you to make note of the following:
  • Prescribed fires are safe and done by trained professionals. – Prescribed fires are planned and carried out by highly trained forest fire managers who provide for safety first.  During this planning process, specific conditions are identified to ensure the safe and successful execution of each prescribed fire.  All necessary precautions were taken for fire control, safety and smoke management.
  • Fire is a natural and necessary part of the Boreal Forest ecosystem  -  Fire has shaped Alberta’s forests for generations and it is nature’s way of achieving healthy and sustainable forests.  In fact many forest animals and plants rely on fire for their very existence.
  • Prescribed burns enable us to use fire positively – By reintroducing fire on the landscape in a controlled manner, we can help to restore the natural balance of our forests while achieving other important objectives like reducing the potential for large wildfires, reducing insect and disease infestations and providing better habitat for Alberta’s wildlife.  This particular burn will help to increase ungulate habitat, thereby decreasing the occurrence of forage on nearby hay fields.
