Lac La Biche Area Update

Wildfire Season Ends, Thanks for your help this Season.

Posted on Fri, Oct 30, 2015

Wildfire Season officially ends tomorrow, October 31.

2015 was a very busy fire season for us.  We had 228 wildfires in the Lac La Biche Wildfire Management Area.  Our fires started early in the Spring, with several of our largest wildfires starting between May 22 and mid June.  We had some grass fires last week, so even though wildfire season officially ends, please remember that wildfires are a threat at any time of year.

After October 31 you no longer need a permit for burning brush piles, windrows and other heavy burning.  We do appreciate if you report your planned winter burning to the office (780-623-5388).  This gives us an advantage in the Spring if smoke is spotted.

Remember to put your campfires out if you are out hunting or recreating this fall.  Mother Nature won't put your fire out!  Snow acts as an insulating blanket and keeps the fire warm and smoulding all winter, digging deep into the ground and emerging as a wildfire in the spring.

There are some things you can do to increase your home's chances of surviving a wildfire.  Cut your grass short one last time, make sure your roof is clear of leaves and branches, clean your eavestroughs, and move your woodpile away from your back door!  These things will help in the event of a spring wildfire near your home.

Thanks for your help this season.  See you in the Spring.
