Wildfire Hazard Jumps to HIGH

The wildfire hazard for the Lac La Biche area is HIGH.  Warmer temperatures and winds have helped dry out the forest after last week's snowfall.

The forecast for tomorrow is for a high of 17 with 25% humidity and winds SE15.  Slightly cooler temperatures and lighter winds may decrease the hazard, however fine fuels on the ground remain very dry and succeptible to wildfire.

Remember that you need a permit for any burning, except a campfire.  Permits let us know where to expect smoke or fire in the forest, and keep us from sending resources where they are not needed.

Even though the grass is starting to turn green, the matted grass in fields and ditches is very dry and continues to pose a threat for wildfire.  Please be careful when working or playing in the forest tomorrow. Check quads frequently for buildup of grass and muskeg that can heat up, dryout, and fall to the ground sparking a wildfire. Sparks from other equipment, bearings, and even from burning barrels and campfires can start a wildfire.  Check your equipment often, keep your fires small, and never burn when winds exceed 15 km/hr.

We had four new wildfires today.  All fires are extinguished or under control.  So far this season we have had 101 wildfires.  We have 15 crews, 4 helicopters and several water trucks on hand to fight fire in the area.

Thanks for doing your part to prevent wildfire.
