The wildfire hazard is MODERATE for the Lac La Biche Forest Area this weekend.

The few days we've had without rain have seen the wildfire hazard climb back to MODERATE. Cooler evenings and morning dew are helping keep grass and leaves damp, but there is still a chance for wildfires.

If you're out berry picking or hunting, and have a campfire, please make sure it's extinguished before you leave it.  Take the time to soak it, stir the ashes and soak it again.  If there's no water available, dump your ice or the water from the bottom of your cooler on your fire.  Or shovel some dirt onto it to smother your fire.

At this time of year, fires left to go out on their own usually turn into ground fires, smouldering slowing and digging in to the ground.  They can be brought back to life with fall winds and become a bigger problem when the grass is cured and dry leaves are on the ground.

Thanks for doing your part to prevent wildfire.  Take the few extra minutes to make sure your campfires are completely out before you leave them.

It's also a great time of year to make your yard more FireSmart for next spring!  Cutting the grass short in the fall will give you a head start against spring wildfires.  Making sure your eaves and roofs are clear of branches and other debris will also help protect your home against potential wildfire in the Spring.

We had no new wildfires this week.

Enjoy the great fall weather while it lasts.
