Reminder - WIldfire Season Starts Today

Posted on Tue, Mar 01, 2016

March 1 officially marks the start of wildfire season.

Just a reminder that you need a permit for any burning during wildfire season.  Call the office at 780-623-5388 to reach your patrolman who will be happy to visit your site and issue a burning permit.  Permits are FREE, and help you to have a safe and successful burn as well as let us know where to expect smoke or fire in the forest.

Now is a good time to revisit your winter burns.  With the dry ground conditions we have been finding that fires are harder to extinguish.  Prod your burns with a metal rod.  If it's hot to the touch then you know your fire is still smouldering underground.  Just like a campfire, you will need to soak the fire, stir the ashes, and soak it again.  Depending on the size of your fire, you might need heavy equipment to stir your fire!

We are monitoring the weather and drought conditions, as always.  We are starting the season with below normal drought conditions, just as we did last year.  Conditions could improve if we receive wet snow or rain in March and April, but in the meantime, be aware, and keep a close eye on any fires.

We could be facing another busy season, and we appreciate your help by getting fire permits, keeping close watch on your fires, and reporting any unexpected smoke or fire to 310-FIRE.
