LWF 126, the Pony Creek Fire west of Chard, is currently 1,000 hectares and classified as out of control. Two fires started yesterday and have combined together. The fire is west of Chard and has not reached the powerline or the railroad. Today's winds out of the northeast are pushing the fire southwest, which is away from the communities of Conklin and Chard. The fire settled down nicely overnight, but hotspots around the perimeter are starting to smoke and flare up again today. As the day heats up and winds increase we expect more fire activity. Tankers are working to drop retardant along the east side of the fire to protect the power lines. Crews and heavy equipment are actioning this fire.
The photos below show smoke visible in the early morning hours today. The vegetation there is a combination of spruce and muskeg.
The map below shows the approximate location of yesterday's burn.
Your next update will be about 9 pm tonight, unless conditions change.
