Lac La Biche Area Update

MODERATE Wildfire Hazard: Three Fires Extinguished Today

Posted on Mon, Jul 13, 2015

gfx-hsb-wildfiredangerupdate-moderateThe wildfire hazard is MODERATE for the Lac La Biche area.

The forecast for tomorrow is for a high of 21 degrees, humidity of 60%, some precipitation, moderate to high lightning and winds W15 km/hr.  Parts of the area received precipitation overnight which helped suppress active fires and prevent new fires.  Other areas didn't receive much precipitation at all.  The increased humidity is helping keep the wildfire hazard at MODERATE for the next few days.

We had one new fire today, which has been extinguished.  We extinguished a total of three fires today.  There are 10 active fires in the area - five are under control, one is being held and four are out of control.  We have 19 crews and 10 helicopters as well as the airtankers positioned across the area to fight any new fires.

The photo below shows crews from Alberta (yellow) and Ontario (orange) on LWF 189

Here's a recap of the current fires in the area:

LWF 202 is Out of Control at 66 hectares.  This fire is in the Bovine area at 11-36-79-18-W4.  We will put ground resources on this fire when safe to do so and when available. The fire got a substantial amount of rain last night.

LWF 198, in the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, saw a status change today to Under Control at 108 hectares.  Crews made good progress today.  There are no values at risk.

LWF 192 saw a status change today to Under Control, at 197 hectares.  Dozer guard is complete around this fire.  There are still some green "islands" within the fire perimeter that are burning.

LWF 191 remains Out of Control at 280 hectares. This fire is 25 km west of Mariana Lake.

LWF 189 is Under Control, at 103 hectares.  This fire is in the Bovine area. There is guard around the entire fire.  Cenovus is about 5 km to the north.

LWF 175 saw a status change today to Being Held, at 13,651 hectares.  This fire, which stretches into Saskatchewan, is located just to the east of LWF 192.  There are no values at risk.  Guard is about 60% complete.

LWF 171 is Under Control at 45 hectares.

LWF 161 remains Out of Control at 14,012 hectares.  The fire is about five miles from Highway 63. Firefighters from Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia are working together to fight this wildfire. The fire received some rain.  Today there was smouldering ground fire and some surface fire.  We hope to take advantage of the reduced fire behavior and put more ground crews in place over the next couple of days.

LWF 122 and LWF 126, from earlier in the season, remain on patrol status.

ASK 001 - Saskatchewan Fire near Garson Lake, is still active on the west side.  We are monitoring this fire.
