Lac La Biche Area Update

MODERATE Wildfire Hazard: 5 Fires Extinguished

Posted on Sun, Jul 12, 2015

gfx-hsb-wildfiredangerupdate-moderateSome precipitation and increased humidity has helped to drop the wildfire hazard to MODERATE.

The forecast for today is for a high of 28 degrees, humidity of 50%, some precipitation, high chance of lightning, and winds shifting from NE15 to NW15.  We are expecting this unsettled weather to continue into Monday.

Winds from the north east and the north west mean the smoke from LWF 161 will be blowing away from Highway 63.

In other good news, we extinguished 5 wildfires yesterday!  Thanks to our firefighters for their hard work on the fireline.

There was little to no growth on our existing fires yesterday (more good news).  And LWF 201, east of Calling Lake saw a status change to Under Control.

Mother Nature gave us a nice break yesterday, and we expect similar success with our fires again today. The thing to remember is that the temperatures are still very warm and we are receiving quite a bit of lighting with the showers we are receiving.  As you know, the lightning charge remains in the ground for several days, and can emerge as a wildfire when the conditions are right.  So, when the showers pass and the humidty climbs back up, we will be on the lookout for holdover lightning fires.

In the meantime, enjoy the day. Thanks for doing your part to prevent wildfire.
