A fire advisory is in effect for the Lac La Biche area.  The wildfire hazard is VERY HIGH.

We are not issuing permits at this time.  Existing fire permits are still valid, with the exception of any heavy burning.  Follow all conditions on the permit - never burn when winds exceed 15 km/hr.  Essential burning only - please avoid any unnecessary burning on Friday.  Campfires are allowed, provided they are small and under control. Never leave a campfire unattended, and ensure it is completely extinguished before you leave it.

The forecast for Friday is for a high of 21 with humidity of 30 and winds SW15.  There is a very slight chance of isolated precipitation in the western portion of the area, but nothing significant.  Cooler temperatures but still dry conditions are forecast for Saturday.

Recent weather conditions mean grass, leaves and twigs on the forest floor are very dry and susceptible to wildfire.  Matted grass that hasn't turned green yet, spruce trees and aspen stands that haven't leafed out yet pose a serious threat for wildfire.

Today we had two new wildfires.  The first fire travelled quickly through the grass and into an aspen stand.  Air tankers and ground crews are currently actioning this fire, which is being held at approximately 5-7 hectares.  Crews will work on this fire into the night and again tomorrow.  The second fires was smaller at .2 hectares.  Both fires are in the Leismer area (west of Conklin), near the Statoil facility.

So far this season we have had 108 wildfires.  We have 14 crews, 9 helicopters, air tankers, and heavy equipment including cats and water trucks on hand.

Be particularly careful when working in the forest tomorrow.  With the long weekend there will be more activity in the forest.  Clean quads and OHVs frequently to prevent debris from building up, heating, and falling to the ground.  Make sure any campfires are completely extinguished before you leave them.

Thanks for doing your part to prevent wildfire.
