Rain showers drop the wildfire hazard to high

WILDFIRE UPDATE JULY 10, 2015 AT 5:30PM

Firefighters from Jalisco, Mexico arrived in High Level today to help fight wildfires north of Meander River. There are now 120 wildfire fighters protecting the community of Meander River. Residents of Meander River remain on an evacuation alert, for information call (780) 926-2786.

The much needed rain showers we had yesterday has dropped the wildfire hazard to high. It will only take a couple of hot, dry days to be right back up to extreme fire hazard levels again. A fire advisory remains in place for the High Level Wildfire Management Area. For more information on fire bans, please visit www.albertafirebans.ca.

The wildfire burning 3 km west of North Tallcree is being held at 5,000 hectares. This means with the current weather and resources this fire is not expected to grow past containment boundaries.

The wildfire in the Buffalo Head Hills area is out of control at 13,077 hectares. This fire is 3 km south east of the Buffalo Head Tower day use area. Residents are advised to stay clear of the area.

Three out of the four wildfires burning 11 km north of Meander River on the west side of Highway 35 are now being held. This means that with the forecasted weather and current resources this wildfire is not expected to grow past predetermined boundaries. One fire remains out of control with a total of 18,620 hectares burned.

The wildfire burning 50 km west of High Level south of Highway 58 remains out of control at 27,950 hectares. 

There are two wildfires burning north and northwest of Steen River, west of Highway 35. The fire burning 12 km north is now under control at 626 hectares. The fire burning 24 km northwest is being held at 9,261 hectares.

There are no wildfires directly threatening the town of Zama City. High Level Wildfire Management Area has received numerous calls of concern regarding an evacuation alert in Zama City.
