As of March 1, 2018 any burning other than a small cooking or warming fire within the Forest Protection Area requires a fire permit. In the High Level Forest Area phone (780) 926-5407 to obtain a free fire permit. Please call with your home location, burn location, daytime phone number and what you plan to burn.
Check All Winter Burn Sites
Spring fires can easily be prevented by ensuring your winter burning is completely extinguished. Check your burn sites for smoke, flame or smoldering debris. If you find smouldering debris stir it up and search for hot spots that may be buried in the ground. Then use water or snow to soak it, stir it, and soak it again, until the area is cool to the touch.
To help ensure deep spots are extinguished you can use a metal probe and insert it into the ground. This is particularly helpful in areas of deep peat. Find more information on safe burning practices for brush piles and windrows here.
Applications for Wildfire Community Preparedness Day 2018 will be accepted until March 9th. This is a great opportunity to receive $500 and put it towards FireSmart events this summer. Each award recipient will receive an event box that is full of FireSmart items and products to help support a FireSmart work day or education event. Apply today
