The fire danger is Very High for the High Level Forest Area and there is a Fire Advisory in effect. Due to the hot and dry weather conditions combined thunderstorms in the forecast, please use caution in the forested areas. Firefighters, aircraft and equipment are prepositioned throughout the area, ready to respond to any new wildfires. Please report wildfires by calling 310-FIRE(3473).
HIGH LEVEL FOREST AREA WILDFIRE UPDATE | JUNE 30, 2021 AT 11:30 AM
There are six active wildfires in the High Level Forest Area. Of these fires, four are Being Held (BH) and two are Under Control (UC). Being Held means given current weather conditions and resources, the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries.
Wildfires of note,
- Fire HWF056, is located approximately 6km to the southwest of the Town of Rainbow Lake. This fire is 10 hectares in size and is classified as Being Held (BH). There are firefighters, and helicopters working on this fire. There is no threat to the Town of Rainbow Lake at this time.
- Fire HTO001, is located approximately 10 km south of the Town of High Level at the West Fraser mill. Agriculture and Forestry support staff and aircraft are assisting the Town of High Level Fire Department.
Since March 1st there have been 57 wildfires in the High Level Forest Area burning a total of 127 hectares.

PROVINCIAL WILDFIRE UPDATE | JUNE 30, 2021
Since March 1, 2021 there has been a total of 607 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta, burning a total of 1,639 hectares.
FIRE ADVISORY IN EFFECT | JUNE 25, 2021 AS OF 10:00 AM
Due to the current and forecasted hot and dry weather the High Level Forest Area has a Fire Advisory in effect.
Under this advisory:
- Existing fire permits are still valid, however, a fire permit renewal may not be issued.
- New permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis, only for essential burning.
- Campfires are allowed.
Prohibited:
- Any burning without a valid fire permit, other than a campfire.
This fire advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve.
FIRE PERMITS
With the forecasted hot and dry weather please ensure you are taking extra care when burning. Always burn responsibly, follow the guidelines of your permit and monitor your burn site.
From March 1st until October 31st, fire permits are required for any burning, except campfires, in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. To request your free fire permit call the High Level Forest Area permit line at 780-926-5407. Leave a message with your home location, burn location, what you plan to burn and our patrolmen will get back to you.
Fire permits help us to track what is burning on the landscape. If you're burning without a fire permit or outside fire permit conditions, your fire is considered a wildfire. By getting a permit you help keep our firefighters free to fight wildfire.
SAVE YOUR FIREWORKS FOR ANOTHER DAY. CELEBRATE TOGETHER ON JULY 1st.
Alberta Wildfire typically sees an increase in human-caused wildfires during long weekends. Last year, 88% of wildfires were human-caused. We all have a role to play to prevent them.
This Canada Day, we encourage everyone to use caution if they are spending time in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. We ask Albertans to always extinguish their campfire when they are done. Soak it, stir it and soak again, until the ashes are cool to the touch.
Fireworks are a popular way of celebrating Canada Day, but they can cause unintentional wildfires. Fireworks and exploding targets create hot debris when they are detonated, which can cause a wildfire when coming in contact with fuels in the forest, such as dry grass.
Albertans who are planning on detonating fireworks in the Forest Protection Area must receive written permission from a forest officer. Anyone who sets off fireworks without written permission could face a fine of $600.
