High Level Forest Area | Wildfire Update May 12, 2019

The wildfire danger for the High Level Forest Area is now at High and a Fire Advisory is in effect. Due to warmer temperatures and no significant rainfall in the forecast. Please use caution in areas of dead, dry grass. To report a wildfire please call 310-FIRE. 


WILDFIRE UPDATE | MAY 12, 2019 AT 9:45PM

There are two wildfires in the High Level Forest Area.

  • Fire HWF041, is located 28km northeast of the community of Meander, east of highway 35. This fire is classified as Being Held (BH) at 15 hectares. There is no threat to the community of Meander.
  • Fire HWF042, is located 26km south of the Town of High Level. This fire is classified as Out of Control (OC) at 350 hectares. Alberta Wildfire has heavy equipment working throughout the evening. There is no threat to the Town of High Level. 

Alberta Transportation had highway 35, south of High Level closed due to fire HWF042, but as of 9:00 PM the highway has been reopened. Please keep informed by checking the Alberta 511 website.

FIRE ADVISORY IN EFFECT AS OF MAY 8, 2019 AT 5PM

A Fire Advisory has been issued for the High Level Forest Area section of the Forest Protection Area, due to warmer temperatures and no significant rainfall in the forecast. The Fire Advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve.

  • Existing permits are still valid.
  • No new permits for heavy fuels (windrows, machine piled brush piles, hand piled brush piles, root rows/root piles) will be issued during this time.

Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished. If you see a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 310-FIRE.


 FIRE PERMITS

In Alberta, wildfire season starts March 1. This means fire permits are required for any burning in the forested areas of the province with the exception of campfires.

Fire permits are free and available from Agriculture and Forestry in the High Level Forest Area. Call 780-926-5407 to obtain a free permit. Ensure you have the following info; daytime phone number, home location, burn site location and a description of what you plan to burn. Once this info is obtained an Agriculture and Forestry patrolman will schedule a visit with you.
