The wildfire danger rating remains low for the Grande Prairie Forest Area this does not mean the risk of wildfire is eliminated. Fall is a time of year when grass and fallen leaves will cure. Cool frosty mornings and breezy afternoons produce frost-killed vegetation that ignites easily and spreads fire fast.

Remember to always fully extinguish small cooking and warming fires before leaving a site as they can burn deep into the ground and holdover the winter to reignite in the spring as a wildfire. Soak it, stir it, soak it again - If you feel heat it is not extinguished.

Fire permits are required in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta until October 31st.

Fire permits are now required for all burning (except for campfires) within the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. New penalties now exist for failure to produce a fire permit when requested by a forest officer, read more here.
