Grande Prairie Wildfire Update- June 19, 2018

The wildfire danger for the Grande Prairie Forest Area is High. The forest fuels are becoming dry, increasing the risk of human caused wildfire. Warmer temperatures will continue to dry out areas of dead grass. Use extreme caution if you are using an off-highway vehicle (OHV) and take the time to check for debris that may be caught up on your machines very hot exhaust systems.

You can be held responsible if a fire escapes the burn permit area. If you live within the Forest Protection Area, please contact your local Forestry office to get a permit (780) 538-5560. Anyone living outside the Forest Protection Area can contact their municipality for information about local fire permit requirements. Find more information on safe burning practices for brush piles and windrows hereRemember you must evaluate the weather at your specific location.

WILDFIRE UPDATE   5:30 pm - 06/19/18

The Grande Prairie Forest Area has recorded 24 wildfires with a total of Five hectares burned since wildfire season began March 1, 2018.  

Throughout the province of Alberta the 2018 wildfire season has seen 600 fires and burned a total of 30,290.27 hectares. See a current map of active wildfires here.

Safe campfire

The Forest and Prairie Protection Act include fines up to $287 for abandoning campfires as well as for using fireworks and exploding targets in forested areas. Learn more about updates to the act and fine amounts here.

Remember to do your part to prevent wildfires. Human caused wildfires are 100% preventable.
