Wildfire Update - June 28, 2017, 11:00 AM
There have been no new wildfires in the Grande Prairie Forest Area in the past 24 hours and there are no active fires in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.
There have been 23 wildfires so far this season that have burned a total of 4.86 hectares in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.
Throughout the province of Alberta the 2017 wildfire season has seen 601 fires burn a total of 2,807.95 hectares. See a current map of active wildfires here.
Soak It, Stir It, Soak It Again
As schools let out and summer camping and recreating begins it is important to remember that a campfire left smouldering can cause a wildfire.
Never leave your campfire unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished before you leave your site. Remember to soak it, stir it and soak it again. If you can still feel heat coming off the ashes it is not extinguished.
Recent amendments to the Forest and Prairie Protection Act include fines for abandoning campfires as well as for using fireworks and exploding targets in forested areas. Learn more about updates to the act and fine amounts here.
Ride Debris Free
Off-Highway vehicle exhausts can reach temperatures of over 200 degrees celcius. Even wet, muddy debris can dry up quickly at these temperatures. This debris can ignite and fall off the vehicle potentially starting a wildfire.
You can help reduce your chance of starting a wildfire by stopping periodically to remove any built up debris from hot spots on your vehicle.
