The wildfire danger for the Grande Prairie Forest Area is now MODERATE. Gusty wind conditions are in the forecast for the next couple of days. High wind can cause extreme fire behavior and allow fires to grow fast.

Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution if you are burning or using an off-highway vehicle in areas of dried grass, as grass fire can spread quickly and become hard to control. Spring is an especially dangerous time in terms of wildfire starts. Last year 88 percent of wildfires were human-caused which means they were completely preventable.

Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Hazard Reduction Burning.

good conditions RS

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry along with the Sturgeon Lake Fire Department is currently conducting a hazard reduction burn in the community of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. Firefighters are making good progress with 10 hectares complete. Burning will continue until weather permits or the burn is complete. Spring hazard reduction burning will lessen the risk of man-caused fires and help protect homes and community infrastructure from future wildfires. Removing fine fuel loading along ditches, open fields, OHV trails and other recreation areas is another step in making this community FireSmart.

Fire permits

Fire permits help us keep track of burning being done throughout the province. Burning is not permitted during windy conditions. Remember you must evaluate the weather at your specific location. Get a permit and follow the conditions. You can be held responsible if a fire escapes the burn permit area. If you live within the Forest Protection Area (FPA), please contact your local Forestry office.  Anyone living outside the FPA can contact their municipality for information about local fire permit requirements.
