The recent warm and windy weather is contributing to an increased fire danger for our area. The current wildfire danger for the Grande Prairie forest area is HIGH. Currently, we have had 35 fires in the Grande Prairie forest area that have burned 13.0 hectares.

Smoke from Wildfires burning in British Columbia is drifting into our forest area today causing smoke and hazy conditions. Expect smoke in the air for the next couple of days. For the latest smoke forecast check out the Western Smoke Forecast If you have smoke-related health concerns, please contact Alberta Health Link at 811. Information about the air quality in Alberta is available through Alberta’s Air Quality Health Index aep.alberta.ca/air or by phone, toll-free, at 1-877-247-7333.

Remember to do your part to prevent wildfires. Human caused wildfires are 100% preventable

BEFORE YOU BURN IT, GET YOUR PERMIT For more information on fire permits or to obtain one call the Grande Prairie office at (780) 538-5560.

  • Remember that you must evaluate the weather at your specific location and follow the conditions stated on your permit. You can be held responsible if a fire escapes the burn permit area.
  • If you have done burning on your land recently it’s a good idea to check your burn pile. Spread out remaining ash and fuel that remains unburnt. Probe the area for hot spots using a metal rod,  using your hand, feel for heat over the ash pile. If you see smoke or feel heat, the fire is still burning beneath the surface. Drench any remaining hot spots with water and stir up the ashes.
  • No permits for heavy fuel or non essential burning will be issued at this time.
