Grande Prairie Area Update

Humidity values have improved from yesterday but near cross over conditions are still occurring over most boreal zones. In the wake of the front gusty north-easterly winds will develop.

During times of very high hazard, fires can ignite and spread rapidly. It is important to exercise extreme caution while working or recreating in Alberta’s forests. The Grande Prairie area has reported 28 wildfires which have burned 75 hectares, 21 of these fires where human caused, two were sparked by lightning, the remaining five are under investigation.

Check burned sites for possible hold-over fires. During times of dry weather, lightning strikes or improper extinguished fires can flash back to life, especially during a wind event. Spread out remaining ash and probe the area for hot spots. Using your hand, feel for heat over the ash pile. If you see smoke or feel heat, the fire is still burning beneath the surface. Drench any remaining hot spots with water and stir up the ashes. Thank you for doing your part to prevent wildfires, if you spot a wildfire call 310-FIRE.

The fire ban applies to the province’s Forest Protection Area (FPA). Other jurisdictions outside the FPA, including municipalities and provincial parks, may issue their own fire restrictions or bans. Please check albertafirebans.ca daily for detailed information about restrictions and locations.

The full fire ban prohibits all open fires, including campfires in campgrounds or backcountry and random camping areas. This includes charcoal briquettes. Portable propane fire pits and gas or propane stoves and barbecues designed for cooking or heating are allowed. All fire permits are suspended or cancelled and no new fire permits will be issued.
