Check your winter burns

As spring takes hold it's time to check your winter burns. Revisit them to ensure they are extinguished. Snow will not put out a fire. A fire left smouldering can continue to burn under the snow all winter and re-emerge as a wildfire in the spring.

Follow these tips to prevent wildfires this spring:

  • Spread remaining material within the pile and soak with water as required.
  • Check the area and ensure both heat and smoke are no longer being produced by the pile – it should be cool to the touch.

Check your burn site multiple times in the following weeks to ensure it has not reignited.

Fire Permits are required

From March 1st to October 31st, a fire permit is required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area. A campfire for cooking or warming does not require a fire permit.

To request your free fire permit call the Fort McMurray Forestry Office at 780-743-7125.

For more information call the Alberta Forestry office in Fort McMurray at 780-743-7125.
