MOUNTAIN PINE BEETLE CONTROL PROGRAM

One of the methods we use to control Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) from spreading is to cut and burn infested trees. Over the next few months you may see more burn piles and smoke than you're used to seeing during the winter. Use caution if you are traveling in these areas as visibility may be reduced.

Safety first. Burning will only commence when the forecasted weather and on-the-ground conditions allow for a safe, controlled burn.

October 31st marked the end of the 2017 wildfire season in Alberta. Fire permits are no longer required however, you are responsible for any fires you ignite over the winter. Take the time to properly prepare your burn site, know the requirements needed for a successful burn and properly extinguish your site. For more information visit our blog on the five tips for successful winter burning.

Smoke and smog

On particularly cold winter days, inversions and other weather factors can cause smoke from a winter burn to stay close to the ground. An inversion happens when cold air is trapped near the ground by a layer of warmer air above.

Wind direction is an important factor to take into account when deciding whether to start a burn. Consider what values are downwind of the proposed burn area. Take care to ensure that smoke from the fire won't negatively impact surrounding areas.

Check Environment Canada’s Air Quality Health Index to track winter smog in your community and find health information.

Thanks for doing your part to prevent wildfires. Continue to use caution with your winter burning.
