Calgary Forest Area Wildfire Update - Sept. 22, 2017

THE FIRE BAN AND OHV PROHIBITION HAVE BEEN LIFTED FOR THE CALGARY FOREST AREAHOWEVER, A RESTRICTION AND ADVISORY REMAIN IN EFFECT.

FIRE RESTRICTION is in effect for the Forest Protection Area (FPA) south of Highway 532 (MAP):

Under the Restriction:

  • All existing Fire Permits are suspended.
  • No new Fire Permits will be issued.

NOT PERMITTED

  • Wood campfires in the backcountry, random camping areas or on private land within the FPA.
  • Charcoal briquettes, turkey fryers, and tiki torches.
  • Fireworks and exploding targets. 

PERMITTED

  • Gas or propane stoves, heaters, barbecues, portable propane fire pits, and campfires in designated campground fire rings only.

The Restriction will remain in effect until further notice.

FIRE ADVISORY is in effect for the Forest Protection Area (FPA) south of the Red Deer river to Highway 532:

  • No new Fire Permits will be issued
  • Safe campfires are allowed

The Advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

CFA WILDFIRE SUMMARY

Currently, there is 1 wildfire (ABC002) in the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) section of the Forest Protection Area (FPA)

Alberta Wildfire has established guard in the south Castle to prevent the wildfire from spreading north. There are 2 helicopters operating in the area.

There are an additional 50 firefighters, 7 helicopters, 1 airtanker and other heavy equipment positioned in the Calgary Forest Area to assist/action new wildfire starts.

WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK - KENOW FIRE

Alberta Wildfire is assisting Parks Canada with operations on the Kenow wildfire. There are currently 18 firefighters/Support staff, 7 helicopters and various pieces of heavy equipment deployed to the incident.

PROVINCIAL SUMMARY - 22 SEPTEMBER 2017

  • Alberta currently has 14 wildfires: 1 wildfire is being held, 11 are under control and 2 have been turned over to the responsible parties.
  • Since March 1, Alberta has recorded 1,172 wildfires that have burned a total of 45,427.11 hectares.

2017 REGULATION CHANGES FOR THE FOREST PROTECTION AREA

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry has made changes to the Forest Prairie and Protection Act and Regulations. The changes are in support of the government commitment to protect Albertans and their communities from the threat of wildfire. Full details on the changes can be found here.
